A P9 form (P9A or P9B) is an annual tax certificate issued by employers to each employee after the end of the tax year (January–December). It summarises total gross pay, total PAYE deducted, total NSSF deducted, and any other statutory deductions for the year. Employees need their P9 to file individual income tax returns on KRA iTax.
The P9 form is used by employees to file annual income tax returns on KRA iTax. It provides the annual totals required for the individual tax return: total gross employment income, total PAYE deducted, and other deductions. Employees must have their P9 before they can submit their tax return.
Employers are required to issue P9 certificates to employees by the end of February following the tax year. The KRA iTax deadline for individual income tax returns is 30 June each year. Missing a P9 can delay your tax return, so employees should request it from their HR or payroll department promptly.
P9A is issued to employees who have only one employer for the year. P9B is issued where an employee changed employers during the year and each employer issues their portion. Both forms serve the same purpose but reflect whether the PAYE was computed using the graduated relief (P9A) or the flat rate method (P9B).
