How are bonuses taxed in Kenya?

In Kenya, bonuses are not taxed under a separate flat rate. Instead, KRA stacks your bonus on top of your regular monthly income during the month it is paid. Because it sits at the top of your earnings, it is taxed entirely at your highest marginal tax bracket (which is often 30%, 32.5%, or 35% depending on your total gross income).

How Bonuses Are Taxed in Kenya (2026)

In Kenya, bonuses are treated as employment income and are subject to PAYE at your marginal tax rate. The bonus is added on top of your regular monthly salary, and the combined income is taxed using the same progressive KRA tax bands. You pay tax on the bonus at your highest applicable rate.

How is PAYE calculated on a bonus in Kenya?

The bonus is added to your gross salary for the month it is paid. PAYE is then calculated on the combined figure. The difference between the PAYE on salary alone and the PAYE on salary-plus-bonus is the tax attributable to the bonus. High earners may have their bonus taxed at 30%, 32.5% or 35% depending on their income bracket.

Is NSSF also deducted from a bonus in Kenya?

NSSF contributions are based on monthly earnings. Since the maximum employee NSSF is KES 6,480/month under the 2026 Year 4 tiered structure (on earnings up to KES 108,000), if an employee's regular salary already reaches or exceeds KES 108,000, a bonus does not attract additional NSSF deductions. If base pay is below KES 108,000, Tier II NSSF applies to the bonus portion up to the KES 108,000 ceiling.

How much of my bonus will I keep after tax in Kenya?

It depends on your income bracket. An employee earning KES 50,000/month who receives a KES 20,000 bonus will keep roughly 70% of the bonus (taxed at 30%). A top-bracket earner (gross above KES 800,000) keeps only about 65% (35% marginal rate). Use our Bonus Tax Calculator above for exact figures.
