How is Net to Gross calculated?

Because KRA taxes and levies are progressive and interdependent, reversing net salary to gross cannot be solved with a simple percentage. Center Board's calculator uses an advanced mathematical solver (binary search algorithm) to calculate the precise gross salary needed down to the nearest shilling.

How to Calculate Net to Gross Salary in Kenya (2026)

When you receive a salary offer as a net figure (what you take home), or want to know what gross salary you need to earn a specific net amount, CenterBoard's net-to-gross calculator uses binary search to reverse-engineer your gross salary based on 2026 PAYE, NSSF (Tier I & II), SHIF (2.75%) and Housing Levy (1.5%) rates.

If I want to take home KES 50,000 in Kenya, what gross salary do I need?

To take home KES 50,000/month in Kenya in 2026, you need a gross salary of approximately KES 68,860 under 2026 Year 4 statutory rates. This accounts for PAYE (~KES 11,802), NSSF (~KES 4,132), SHIF (~KES 1,894), and Affordable Housing Levy (~KES 1,033). Use our calculator above for your exact salary breakdown.

Is the net salary the amount deposited to my bank account in Kenya?

Yes. Net salary (also called take-home pay) is your gross salary minus all statutory deductions: PAYE, NSSF, SHIF and the Affordable Housing Levy. It is the amount credited to your bank account each payroll period, before any voluntary deductions like SACCO or HELB loan repayments.

Why does gross salary in Kenya include NSSF in the PAYE calculation?

NSSF contributions are deducted from gross salary before PAYE is applied. This means your taxable income is lower than your gross salary, reducing the PAYE you owe. When converting from net to gross, the calculator must account for this circular dependency, which is why an iterative search is used.
