How NSSF Contributions Are Calculated in Kenya (2026)
The NSSF (National Social Security Fund) is a mandatory pension contribution for all formal employees in Kenya under the NSSF Act No. 45 of 2013. In 2026, under the gazetted Year 4 contribution schedule (effective February 2026), contributions are split into Tier I and Tier II based on employee gross salary.

Employer NSSF mirrors employee contributions with an equal match (up to KES 6,480/month employer side). Both employee and employer contributions are combined and remitted to NSSF monthly. Employee NSSF contributions reduce taxable income before PAYE tax calculation.
How much is NSSF in Kenya 2026?
Under the 2026 Year 4 NSSF schedule, an employee earning KES 108,000 or more pays a maximum of KES 6,480/month (KES 540 for Tier I on the first KES 9,000, plus KES 5,940 for Tier II on earnings up to KES 108,000). For lower salaries, 6% applies across the tiers up to your actual gross pay.
Does NSSF reduce PAYE taxable income in Kenya?
Yes. Employee NSSF contributions are deducted from gross salary before progressive PAYE tax bands are applied. This lowers your taxable income and reduces overall PAYE liability.
Who pays Tier II NSSF contributions in Kenya?
Both employees and employers contribute 6% each towards Tier II for monthly earnings between KES 9,001 and KES 108,000. Employers with approved private contracted-out retirement schemes may remit Tier II contributions to their private scheme upon approval from the Retirement Benefits Authority (RBA) and NSSF Board.
